The Journey of the Broken JOY Platter

My friend and fellow yogi Greta and her husband have invited us to their holiday party in December year after year. Lots of fun socializing, indulging in snacks and beverages, getting in the holiday spirit.

My husband that first year we attended had an unfortunate incident with a platter that was stationed over by the little mini bar set up in the corner. The plate had the word JOY sprawled across the center with holiday patterns on it. My husband felt terrible that this happened, so the following days he scoured Amazon for a replacement plate.

We ended up the getting the replacement plate after a few tries (Amazon wasn’t the smartest in packaging and it was broken the first time we received). To everyone’s surprise, it was the SAME EXACT plate he broke at the party a couple months earlier, and this is forever a little joke every time we attend the party and see it displayed.

As we approach the holiday season, especially starting with November, many of these feelings are present. We give thanks and offer gratitude to what we have and we experience joy when we achieve selflessness to the point of personal sacrifice. The feeling of joy can never be broken or taken away. It always exists. It about creating space for it, and being open to give and receive.

This holiday season might appear very different to many of us. Some may have troubles dealing and for others it actually may allow us to find joy in things we haven’t been able to before. Where ever life takes us, just remember we all have joy within us and there is plenty to go around.
