All about the supplements

In the early part of 2020, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s. I discuss it a little in another blog, but basically it’s a thyroid condition where the immune system attacks the thyroid gland.

With that, I kind of had to throw my supplement plan out the window. Why? Well, a lot of our overall health is tied to our gut health.  The majority of the vitamins, probiotics, and other supplements were really not doing any good because my gut wasn’t absorbing what was needed.

I started with a few things. I first was instructed by my Dr. that I needed to avoid soy and foods high in iodine. This was kind of hard. Many prepared “vegan” foods contain soy proteins...like a lot, so this involved a lot of label reading. Soys best buddy is gluten. I had also read from many support groups as well as several different books that gluten also was a big problem with gut health….so I said goodbye to beer, pasta, bread and EVERYTHING else (as it seems) that has gluten in it.

Once I did my best to remove those things from my diet, it's time to go to work and repair. I started to eat meat again, but minimal…and most importantly bone broth. Bone broth contains some important amino acids to help aid in better sleep, reduced inflammation, and healing of the digestive tract. After several weeks of bone broth, I started to feel more in sync.

Once I felt like I was at a good place with my gut, time to re-introduce supplements, quality supplements. While the gummy chew multivitamins tasted good, what was my body really getting from those? My husband and I had been listening to the book “Eat Dirt”, a book by Dr.Josh Axe (doctor of natural medicine and a clinical nutritionist), and founder of one of the largest functional medicine clinics in the US. I’m going to circle back to the question about what my body was getting from the chewy vitamins? This book was a game changer, not only did it explain what is really needed in a probiotic, a daily vitamin, and a calcium supplement, but it also explained how to get that eating foods that heal and best practices for my health.

Dr.Axe does have a line of supplements called Ancient Nutrition, that really makes it easy. The idea here is to take ancient chinese medicine, ayurvedic medicine and blend them with vitamins and minerals creating something natural and holistic. A true east meets west with supplements.

Over the last few months of taking these products, my thyroid function has improved, and the medication was reduced. I’m not a doctor, or scientist of any kind. Everyone’s body is different, these supplements may have worked for me, but I can’t guarantee the same results for everyone.  I do suggest, label reading and see what you are really eating. Thanks for reading my share. What have you been supplementing your diet with? Share with me what you’re up to!
